Extensions and roof extensions in Haarlem
1930s houses with deep gardens, and a city centre where appearance carries real weight.
Haarlem’s pre-war districts (Bloemenbuurt, Kleverpark, parts of Haarlem-Noord) consist of brick terraced houses with deep back gardens. That is a favourable combination for an extension: there is depth enough, and the existing rear wall is usually a load-bearing masonry wall whose capacity an engineer knows precisely.
The thing to watch here is appearance. Part of the city is a protected townscape, and even outside it the aesthetics committee looks harder than it does in a post-war district. A roof extension on a 1930s house with a characteristic pitched roof is therefore a different conversation from the same work in Schalkwijk, where post-war building leaves far more room.

More space downstairs.
Uitbouw
An extension does not change one room, it changes the way you use your whole ground floor. The kitchen gets room to breathe, the dining table finally seats everyone, and the garden becomes part of the house.

- Open-plan kitchen
- Dining space
- Play space
More space upstairs.
Dakopbouw
A roof extension delivers what an extension cannot: bedrooms. A room of their own for the third child, a master bedroom with a bathroom, a study with a door that closes. A whole extra floor, in the place you already live.

- Children’s room
- Home office
